Feed The Soul

Feed The Soul

Anois teacht an Earraigh,
Beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh …..

The old poem reflects a way of life, peaceful and yet active, in tune with nature, at peace with the world. If you just want to recharge the batteries, or take some time out, a visit to Erris will tick all the boxes. Life is at your pace, at the pace of the surf or the setting sun. The area is rich in character and soul, time is free but precious and nature’s whims are at their most elemental.

They came and farmed this land over 5000 years ago, their achievements hidden for millennia under the bog until the Ceide Fields were discovered over 80 years ago. They brought a language and a culture, we don’t know what is was, but the next main wave of settlers, the Celts brought another language (Gaeilge) and culture that is alive in Erris in the continuous oldest spoken language in Europe.

The music, the culture, the heritage of the area is a rich tapestry that provides a colourful background to a way of life that is evolving but traditional. Visit the working fishing harbours of Port Urlin or Fód Dubh, watch the farmers save the hay, make merry on Fair Day in August, just like people have done for aeons.

Visit the National Park in Ballycroy and imagine a wild land of bog, rich in flora and fauna. Go to Ionad Deirbhle and learn about life on the Inis Gé island from the time of Colmcille (600 AD) until their abandonment in 1932, find out what about the magic of Inis Gluaire, listen to the sea at the Blowhole in Dún na mBó, learn about mythology of Queen Meadhb, visit the largest outdoor public art trail in Ireland (Tír Sáile), or maybe, just maybe walk the beach all on your own as the tide ebbs and flows around you.
